Citrus Fruit Flower Tutorial (as seen in the Bagel Charcuterie Board pics)
What You’ll Need:
- Citrus fruits (oranges, grapefruits, limes, lemon etc.)
- A paring knife
- A sharp knife
- Cutting board
Step-by-Step Instructions:
- Slice the Citrus Fruit:
Begin by slicing your orange, grapefruit, or lime in half. This gives you two pieces to work with. - Trim the Bottom Half:
Take one half of the citrus fruit and slice off a thin layer from the bottom (the flat part). This will allow the fruit to sit flat and stable on your board while you build your flower. - Remove the Fruit Flesh:
Using a paring knife, gently cut around the inside perimeter of the fruit, just below the skin, to scoop out the flesh. You’re left with a hollow rind, which becomes the base for your flower. - Prepare the Remaining Half:
With the remaining half of the citrus, slice it into very thin slices, about 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick. - Cut and Shape the Slices:
Once you have your thin slices, cut them in half. Begin placing the half slices into the hollowed-out rind with the rind side up, overlapping each slice slightly as you work your way toward the center. As you get closer to the middle, you may need to cut the slices again to make them fit tightly and form a rounded shape. - Finish the Flower:
Once you’ve layered enough slices to form a beautiful flower, take a small piece of citrus and fold it into the center. This will complete the flower and give it a nice, tight center.
Additional Tips:
- Adjusting Size: As you get closer to the middle of the flower, the slices will become smaller to fit snugly. Keep adjusting the slices to ensure the flower looks neat and full.
- Other Citrus Fruits: You can create these flowers with various citrus fruits like lemons, grapefruits, oranges, and limes. You can even mix them for a multi-colored look!
